Can Tom Do It?

Racing 100 miles and raising $10,000 for Nursing Home Prevention

The idea began a year ago when I watch the movie Race Across the Sky, a documentary on the most difficult mountain bike race in the world. I thought it sounded like something I might want to try, as I was just turning 40 years old and looking for a big challenge! As the idea became a reality, I figured it would be an incredible opportunity to help raise awareness on Nursing Home Abuse and the prevention of it as well as get me in shape! …And this little guy is going to help me get to it ;-)

I was first involved with Nursing Homes as an attorney, defending them over a decade ago. Unfortunately I saw the dark side of nursing homes; the injuries to patients and the small things that could have been done to prevent life changing injuries in the first place. Two of the biggest problems in nursing homes both involve neglect: pressure sores (often called bedsores) and falls. Both of these aflictions can, for the most, part be prevented with proper staffing and care from professionals at the nursing home facilities. It is my mission to help educate the public on what really goes on in some of the nursing homes and to help stop abuse from even occurring to elders. Awareness and Prevention are the key! Please donate for the cause as 100% of all your donations will be going to The Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect at the UC Irvine School of Medicine here at www.centeronelderabuse.org.

Please take the time to read through the website, learn a little more about nursing home prevention, and the Leadville 100 Mountain Bike race and Please. Please DONATE to help the cause. My dad recently was admitted to a nursing home and I know that everyone, at some point or another, will have to deal with a nursing home either through a loved one or youself. Let’s do our best to prevent nursing home abuse in the future and educate people on what we/they can do take make nursing homes safe.

Ironically, my very beginner-level mountain biker girlfriend, is also a Leadville 100 MTB entrant. So, we are going Head-to-Head on the race to raise $10,000 for the The UCI Center of Excellence on Elder Abuse and Neglect.
